Ben SoumahoroPatient Finance Services Rep / St. Vincent’s Medical Center / New York, NY
Mamadou Ben Soumahoro, a patient finance services rep at St. Vincent’s Medical Center corporate offices in Manhattan, is a firm believer in labor-management cooperation. “It’s a way for us to be heard on the issues we’re in contact with daily,” says Soumahoro, a delegate who chairs his 220-member chapter. “The result is improved efficiency that brings in more revenue.” And of course, he adds, St. Vincent’s workers have a lively interest in their employer’s financial health. Soumahoro helped lead an address correction project that was one of the accomplishments of the labor-management committee at his workplace. Others include a reduction in Medicare claims returned to provider because of technical or informational error, increased reimbursement for mplantable devices, and improved coordination of benefits. “We have a good relationship with management,” says Soumahoro. “It’s important to have good communication. And our labor-management input has helped build management respect for workers.”
