Volunteers Are What Make Us Strong

With 275,000 active and retired members in New York, Maryland, Washington D.C. and Massachusetts, we know that there is there is strength in numbers. But no matter how big we grow, 1199SEIU understands that the key to building a better life for our members, our families and our patients lies in the hands of a politically active membership. A strong, vibrant volunteer effort is crucial to winning political victories, saving healthcare and protecting the rights of working people.

1199SEIU has been able to win victories in large part due to its “army” of dedicated volunteers. In 2004. we organized nearly one thousand Heroes, a group of volunteers who registered millions of new voters in the “swing” states. In 2005, Healthcare Champions, another group of member volunteers, worked day and night in neighborhoods, on the phones and at the state capitol to protect funding for quality healthcare in New York. Year around, our Member Political Organizers volunteer to take on leadership roles to help elect worker-friendly candidates.
